Is this possible? Use OpenWRT running on my WRT54GL as the auth server itself?

No, unless you do a hardware modification to the WRT54GL to support external storage, you can forget about it ... the WRT54GL has much too less space (and also RAM).

You'd need space for a webserver, PHP5 plus some modules, some PEAR libs and PostgreSQL plus space for the database ...

Note that writing a small splash-only auth server for OpenWRT would be possible, there have been many requests, but so far, no one has coded or financed such a feature.
