When I get it working, I can reach the Internet, and it resets properly after any idle period, and I can log back on to the Internet.

If I pull the power plug for a few minutes, and then try to come back online, I end up with http://www.google.ca/ in the address bar and the [page cannot be displayed] page on the screen.

Should I not be redirected to the Green Screen http://192.168.2.1/index

On another router running Wifidog 1.1.3 this is what happens, and after clicking ''click here'' I am back online.

During one test, I turned the computer off for the night, left the router on, and the next morning I could log back on. There also was one occasion where I could get back on about 50 minutes later, but generally it will not allow me to get back online.

And for other reasons it can also be necessary to split the Lan and Wifi interface from each other.

You can setup Wifidog to watch only one interface at a time. So, in a non-bridged router setup you need to choose between the Lan interface or the Wifi interface.

Proposal: make it possible for Wifidog to capture the traffic for more than one interface at a time. Technically it must be possible, nocatsplash for example can do this. nocatsplash is however not a viable replacement for Wifidog. At least not for me.

Logically, the server is the authenticater, and should it not authenticate mac and/or user name and password?

I have coded scripts to configure our nodes before they go into the field. As I add the code to implement wifidog into our remote nodes, I see/believe the TrustedMACList is going to be very long. In addition we have to update the TrustedMACList in an existing node before we can add a new node that routes through the existing node.

I suspect in all cases, the wifidog server is a computer that is much more capable of dealing with a long list of mac addresses. The server is also much more likely to be physically accessible if something goes wrong.

There are some related features already present, but they do not fit my particular use case:

 * The standard logout option only logs out the requesting IP address

 * The auth server can already return a disconnect authcode when the gateway does its regular
   update process. This means there will be a, possibly signficant, delay between requesting a
   disconnect in the auth server and the gateway actually disconnecting someone. When dealing with
   abuse, spamruns, etc. this is undesirable.

I have implemented this in two patches:

 0001-Add-a-basic-disconnect-command.patch::
     This implements a very basic disconnect command and hooks it into the http server.

 0002-Refactor-logout-logic-so-we-can-share-code.patch::
     This refactors various bits of code so the logout logic is shared between the
     firewall update process, wdctl_reset and the disconnect handler

This feature requires the patches from #463 to secure the status page: the status page contains
enough information to allow abusers to disconnect every user connected to a gateway/",wichert@…

Hi,

We want a single password entry box on the login screens that cafe staff can give out to customers and then change it once in a while. We have done this already with another solution by creating a user and then hardcoding the username on the login screens, leaving the password box as an entry field.

We're not sure how to do this with wifidog or is there a better way? We thought about using external radius but it seems over the top. Also, we need to prevent the end user from changing the password.

Thanks to the locals, the number of user accounts quickly expanded to well over 600 in a matter of days (very few of the users ever validated an account, and rather just kept making new ones with fake emails after the validation period). Obviously, these excess accounts are quite annoying, and I've noticed there doesn't seem to be an easy way to delete accounts. I know a ticket or two has been opened previously mentioning this, and if I recall correctly, simply deleting a username from the database skews statistics?

I just wanted to share a possible solution with you guys. Unfortunately, the setup I run now uses only one network on one hotspot, distributed across many access points around the campus. The server is pretty much only used for having a user login/create an account, and then be redirected and on their way. For administrators, we just monitor the server and clean up users as necessary. Also, I would like to point out that my knowledge of PostgreSQL is probably no where near yours, and I hardly know anything about C/PHP.

That being said, here's what I've set up.
In the SQL database, I created three views (I had hoped for only two, but limited knowledge combined with some error involved in non-validated accounts not having a ""timestamp_out"" in some cases prevented that). The first view collected accounts from the database that have an ""age"" of 30 days or more (""age"" referring to the number of days between ""now"" and the most recent ""timestampe_out""). Something like this:

{{{
CREATE VIEW xxx AS SELECT u.username, to_char(max(c.timestamp_out), 'YYYY-MM-DD') AS last_used, date_part('day', (SELECT now() - max(c.timestamp_out)) AS age FROM users AS u JOIN connections AS c ON u.user_id=c.user_id GROUP BY u.username WHERE (SELECT now() - max(c.timestamp_out) > '30' ORDER BY date_part('day', (SELECT now() - max(c.timestamp_out)) DESC;
}}}
I know that looks a little messy. I actually cheated and made a ""days_since_last_connection"" view for all accounts, then just extracted the >30 aged accounts from it, but that should do it.
Then I made a view for accounts that haven't been validated:

{{{
CREATE VIEW xxx AS SELECT * FROM users WHERE account_status = 5 AND date_part('day', (SELECT now() - reg_date)) > '14';
}}}
This gives you accounts that were never validated older than 14 days (obviously, the numbers can be changed to whatever).
And finally, those weird accounts that don't have a timestamp_out. This one I did using the ""days_since_last_connection"" shortcut (it would display a number of usernames with no ""age""). I created a view from it to display the age from reg_date where the age was null:

{{{
SELECT d.username, d.age, (SELECT now() - u.reg_date) AS real_age FROM days_since_last_connection AS d JOIN users AS U ON d.username=u.username WHERE d.age IS NULL AND (SELECT now() - u.reg_date) > '14 days';
}}}
After those views were created, I just wrote a simple PERL script, using the DBI module, that let me select the usernames from these views and delete them from the users table. Your constraints are set up fine to delete connections relative to usernames, which is where I imagine most of your statistical data comes from, but I'm not entirely sure. Anyway, I just have that script running from the crontab every morning and it keeps the database pretty clean.

Sorry for the long ticket, especially if this ends up being worthless. Hoping that this idea could help you guys come up with a simple way to delete accounts easily as I'm sure there is a much better way than what I have done.
Thanks, and thanks for your software. Despite a difficult set up for me, it's been pretty nice ever since it started working.",anonymous

We could allow the option for operators to upload content that is randomly selected and will be displayed at certain intervals during their time browsing the internet at the hotspot.

for instance, every 15 minutes, the auth server redirects the webpage to a image advertising coca cola. or another thing maybe in house promotions like ""cup of coffee only £0.99…"" which is displayed for a length of time and then allows the original request to continue.

A content manager would be needed for this and some way to schedule when and how long the adverts should run for.

{{{
        Acct-Input-Packets = 825832760
        Acct-Output-Packets = 909522481
}}}
In this example the types and values should have been something like this:
{{{
        Acct-Input-Octets = 1959858
        Acct-Output-Octets = 67770
}}}

In other words, wifidog lifts byte counters from clients, so the RADIUS attributes should be changed to Octets from Packets. Also, the counter values are not correctly converted from string to integer values.

The fix for RADIUS attribute types is to change RADIUS_ACCT_INPUT/OUTPUT_PACKETS to RADIUS_ACCT_INPUT/OUTPUT_OCTETS in wifidog-auth/wifidog/classes/Authenticators/AuthenticatorRadius.php

My intial fix to correct the string to integer conversion, which I now think is not completely correct, was to replace `incoming` with `intval($info['incoming']` and do the respective change for `outgoing` too.

This fix gives correct values to RADIUS accounting, but does not
 * correct the values that get inserted in the database
 * work when the counters exceed 2^31^

Please see e.g., http://fi2.php.net/intval for discussions how `intval` works only upto 2^31^. The reader suggested fix seems to be converting the values with something like `incoming +=0`.

I think the fix should go into wifidog-auth/wifidog/auth/index.php but I have not tried this, since I do not have a working wifidog client currently.

I'm having a bit of a problem with my server's processor overloading during a live test of WiFiDog.
I've been working on this system on and off for about a year, and have been able to get everything on the system to work properly in test environments. However, when the server went live just last week, the server started slowing down dramatically (taking about a minute just to navigate between the login page and signup page).

Some basic information:
Gateway Version is 20090925 (I downloaded it in October, I believe, but have not svn'd most updates since)
Auth server was whichever was available at the same time I downloaded that gateway (similarly, have not svn'd many updates)
Debian 5.0.4
1gb RAM, 1.36 gHz processor (Pentium III)

We currently have approximately 190 wireless access points deployed through which users can connect to our Guest Wireless system for which WiFiDog is running. (Possibly the issue? A lot of people could have been connecting all at once).

My co-workers suggest the issue may also be with the email system when trying to create a new account. In the live environment, the server is running outside of our main network, outside our firewall, causing the email setup from my test environment to not work. So, when creating a new user, it loads for a very long time before throwing an error that my email address is not valid (I assure you, it is). Could this possibly throw some kind of process into a loop that uses up the CPU? (Running a 'top' reveals a number of apache processes simultaneously using up 18-20% of the CPU)

Any help with this issue will be greatly appreciated. Let me know if there's any more information you would like from me.",anonymous

Auth server configuration allows SSL to be used for a particular virtual host by setting the Allow SSL on this Server setting. This flag toggles whether the prefix to all absolute URL links within returned pages are prefixed by http or https. This allows you to have an insecure or secure session.

There is one problem with this approach. If the wifidog administrator chooses to set up the virtual host to *not* use SSL, but an SSL certificate exists, then the user cannot do her own risk assessment and determine that for this particular login session that she wants to use a secure session, or even just a secure login transaction. This is of importance when doing logins over unsecured wireless networks, where any joker running WireShark can collect your unencrypted credentials. It is of crucial importance to wifidog admins logging in as the privledge level allows any blackhat to bring down the entire system once he captures the admin credentials.

For example. If I go to an unsecured wifidog auth portal as https://auth.some-portal.ca, then the returned pages contain a login links for http://auth.some-portal.ca/login/ instead of login. The absolute URL prevents me from continuing with a secure session and makes it very difficult for me to login securely without hand crafting a web page or address.

The problem really comes down to the fact that the returned web pages contain absolute URLs as links. If you were to code all links as relative, a lot of these problems goes away. The only issue then becomes how does a user simply login using SSL or not. This is sometimes solved on other systems that want to give users the choice by having a Button or Link to ""Login"" AND ""Securely Log in"", one which has a relative URL and the other which has an absolute URL to https://the-login-url.

Not sure if this is already a feature or not. I have a community that wants users to have to go to a central place to signup and get their userid and password (two stationary desktops). Where they could print out on the printers atttached to those computers a userid and password. Then they could go to their laptop and use the userid and password. They want them to have to go and get their userid/password on a daily basis to gain access to the network. So their access would expire daily. They do not want them to be able to sign up via their laptop, but only via one of these two computers. The whole thought behind this is that this AP exist at the pool of a condo and the residents around the pool are using the AP as well and they want the residents to have to go to the pool to get access for their laptop on a daily basis. They want to make it difficult for people to basically use the AP as their home wireless service.

One thought was to be able to restrict the signup portal pages via Mac Address and everyone else would just get a regular login page? Just a thought. And I would image there is a way for an account to expire after one day.

Thank you,

Currently I set the following...
-Gateway ID
-Port
-AuthServer hostname
-AuthServer path (Changed from /wifidog to blank since wifidog is the default website)

Everything else was left unchanged. There is pretty much no documentation with wifidog on DD-WRT so I am guessing those are the correct options to choose.

The authserver you can find in the source (http://dev.wifidog.org/browser/trunk/wifidog-auth) is not suitable for my purposes.
I wrote a new server from scratch designed for a single hotspot (although it should not be difficult to implement a mechanism for synchronizing accounts between multiple hotspots, resulting in a distributed auth server ) and I'd like to share it with those who has my same needs.
It is written entirely in PHP, without using templates or external libraries, just plain PHP. (except for a marginal SOAP library used to send text messages to verify the account)
It uses sqlite as database.
It does not implement even a mechanism for language localization, the aim is to keep the most lightweight and simple as possible to allow it to run on embedded devices and also be easily modified also by less experienced.

I tested the server for a while and soon will be operational by serving real customers.
It's not perfect and probably still has some flaws (I have not understood the validation mechanism used by wifidog) but if anyone else was interested and wanted to help improve it I would be happy.

Is there a place where i can upload the sources to make them available?

I just setup a new wifidog installation with the basic purpose of having a redirect page at an inn. No authentication, just redirect to a splash page before the guests surf the net. I did succeed in doing this, however mobile devices, Blackberry Bold and Ipod touch, do not work. They get ip addresses, but when you try to connect to a web site they hang up.

Under network administration I have the following checked Yes:

""Splash-only nodes""
""Portal page redirection""
""Original URL redirection""

Under the node settings:

""Is this node splash-only (no login)""is checked YES
URL to show instead of the portal is filled out

I don't know why it doesn't work on mobile devices. It works perfectly on Windows, MacOS and linux clients.

Thanks for any help.

I finally started to get my head around the CMS and
it's a useful tool.

There are a couple frustrating things that I think
would be easy to change:

1. When the user adds custom content, the system
returns the user to the top of the CMS
(/admin/index.php). It seems that it should return the
user to the Edit Node page for the Node he was
originally on (/admin/generic_object_admin.php)

2. On Edit Node, when the user clicks Preview Node, the
system opens the mockup in the same window. There's no
way to go back to editing. Since it's a gateway
mockup, the page doesn't show the dropdown for edit
node, and the back button does not work (it brings up a
notice that there's a need to repost the information,
but clicking ok doesn't work). It seems that Preview
Node should
 __always__ open in a new window.

I think we all know what I'm talking about.

Opt-in feature. Choose in personal settings whether
want to be viewable by default. Add a button at login
that lets user overide the default setting. ex:

username:
password:
make me:
* visible
* invisible

keep profile simple, with more information available
about other users only if person has filled it out.
For the person's own profile, only show additional
fields if user clicks ""extended profile"".

in simple profile:
-username
-name
-email
-url
-itunes name (with question make for pop-up explaination)

in extended:
-the kitchen sink
